Araneus diadematus, (Garden Spider) females 10 to 18 mm in length, males 4 to 8 mm in length.
Widespread and the most common of the orb web spiders throughout Britain.
Araneus diadematus is also known as the Cross spider or the Diadem Spider.
It is found in a wide range of habitats, wherever A. diadematus has an opportunity to construct an orb web up to 40 cm diameter up to heights of 2.5 m.
The colouring of the garden Spiders abdomen can vary from pale yellowy green through to dark brown, usually with a darker white-edged folium.
This large spider can make quick work of a wide range of large insects, as can be seen in some of the images below; two unfortunate Robberflies captured while mating.
