Cynomya mortuorum
Cynomya mortuorum
Cynomya mortuorum (Carl Linnaeus, 1761)
Order: Diptera, referred to as “true flies”
Blow-Flies. Calliphoridae.
Flight period: May to September
Body length of 8 to 15 mm.
Widespread in the United Kingdom but not so common as the “Bluebottle” and “Greenbottle”. Found over much of Europe, Asia, America and Turkestan, including most of the northern regions of these continents.
Habitat: Woodland edges, meadows and other various places with flowers as adults feed on the pollen.
Eggs (1.62 to 1.75mm in length, generally larger than other Calliphoridae eggs) are laid on carrion. (usually small dead animals) When carrion is absent, excrement can also enable development; by providing food for the larvae. The larvae’s holometabolous development time, (also called metamorphosis when complete) extends to approximately 38 days as with most other “Blow-Flies”.
