Dioctria Rufipes, (De Geer 1776) Common Red-Legged Robberfly, Length approx. 15 mm.
Flight season May to July
Widespread throughout the U.K.
The front two pairs of legs are usually orange-red and the hind legs almost entirely black, although variants do occur. D.Rufipes has a well-developed tubercle at the base of the antennae which helps to recognise it from other Dioctria species.
Habitat…scrub land, meadows and well wooded areas.
