Dolycoris baccarum (Linnaeus, 1758) Commonly known as “Hairy Shieldbug or Sloe bug.”
Family: Pentatomidae (Generally called “Shield bugs or Stink bugs”)
Adult: All Year
Length: 11 to 12mm
The Hairy Shieldbug is common and widespread across southern Britain and southern parts of Europe, but not so common the more north you into Britain and Europe. It hibernates in the cold winter months, usually in leaf litter or in-between leaves that remain on the plant, emerges in the Springtime to find a mate. The nymphs are also hairy and will be seen feeding on a wide variety of plants and shrubs, they will be adults by the time late August arrives.
Adults’ favourite plants seem to be Blackthorn, Damson, Honeysuckle, Raspberry, and other berry and fruit producing plants/shrubs. (Adults and nymphs favouring plants mostly in the Rosaceae family).
Habitat: A wide variety of habitats Dolycoris baccarum can be found, more commonly seen in meadows, gardens, parks, wastelands, woodland edges and hedgerows.
