Epirrhoe alternata, Common Carpet Moth Wingspan 27 mm to 30 mm
Flight season, April to October
It is the intricate pattern on the wings that gives them their name of “Carpet Moth”, similar to the designs of a best Axminster or Wilton carpet. So, this is not the moth that lays eggs in carpets and where the larvae chew away at your fabrics.
The larvae are generally brown or green but is variable in its markings and feeds on bedstraw. The species overwinters as a pupa.
Is a very common, a day and night flying moth species and they are attracted to light.
Habitat…Wide range of habitats, meadows, hedgerows and especially gardens.
Has several consecutive broods.
