Eristalis intricaria (Linnaeus 1758) wing length 8.25mm to 12mm
Males are dark with a reddish-brown tail. Females are larger and have a white tail
(which can be seen in the images below).
A large hoverfly which is unlike other U.K. Eristalis, in being a furry bumble bee mimic.
Flight time in U.K. Late March to early September, peaking in July.
Generally widespread but is rarely seen in large numbers.
Habitat... mainly woodland and marshland.
A very wide range of flowers visited.
Larvae can be found in mud and fen peat near water, waterlogged ground, field drains and in cow dung on sodden fields. Also ponds with decaying vegetation.
