Length 5 to 7mm, this species is very variable in appearance. It is “BTB” the images shown below are of the male and female
A Widespread and common species in Britain (more common in the south), most of Europe, Northern Asia and as far east as Japan.
Habitat: It can be seen feeding and basking in a wide variety of habitats, marshlands, farmlands, flower meadows, hedgerows, wasteland and various types of woodlands.
Adults feed on nectar and pollen, females lay their eggs in cow dung, for their larvae to feed on.
Larvae can also be found in rotting tree stumps and moss.
