Length: 25 to 35mm
Family Tenebrionidae.
Season: April to September.
Widespread from North Africa to most countries in southern Europe, less widespread the more north you go into Europe, and into the western parts of Asia.
Known as one of several church-yard Beetles, which mainly scavenge for animal remains and droppings mostly at night.
Habitat: Various habitats, coastal, sandy scrubland with various vegetation, dry mountainous areas and woodland edges.
Blaps Gigas can emit a very unpleasant odour in defence, which acts as an effective deterrent to many would be predators.
