Carcharodus lavatherae
Carcharodus lavatherae
Carcharodus lavatherae (Esper,1783)
Wingspan 28 to 34mm
Family: Hesperiidae.
widespread but not a common species, from Northwest Africa, on the east and northern parts of Spain across into Southern Europe, up as far north to the Rhine Rift Valley in central Germany and across to Anatolia (Known as Asia Minor, the south western part of Asia)
Flies from late May to July, just one brood a year.
Habitat: Typically, Grasslands and often found in calcareous areas (containing calcium carbonate; chalky). Mountains up to 1,600m. Rocky scrubland with lavatera, Stachys (“Stachys” is one of the largest genera in the flowering plant family, Lamiaceae) and Sideritis scordioides in Southern Europe for the larvae to feed on.
Due to its diminishing habitats, this species is showing a decline in population numbers; probably this is due to its larval vulnerability being limited to its specific food source.
The Marbled Skipper’s resting position is unusual. Wrapping its wings around the body, thus hiding the legs; the abdomen is then curved high above the thorax.
