Colletes fodiens (Geoffroy, 1785) Hairy-saddled Colletes.
Family: Colletidae.
Length 5.5mm to 6.5mm.
Flight period: June till October
C. fodiens is a widespread bee species mainly close to coastlines in Western and southern Europe, also as far north as the UK. More common in southern European coastlines, including the Channel Islands and across Europe into Asia.
Habitat: Preferring sandy locations, primarily lowland regions including sandpits and coastal dunes. Can also be found along sandy cliff edges, predominantly supported by soft rock structures. Mainly favouring sites where common Ragwort plants are thriving, but will also take nectar from a wide range of other wild plants, mainly from the Asteraceae family.
Nesting occurs in soft sandy ground, although C. fodiens does not seem to form large nesting groups.
