Flight Season: May to October, abundant between June to July.
A Widespread species found in most countries that border onto the Mediterranean, also found in South Africa and parts of China. It is a common but not an abundant species, so being one of the rarer species of the genus “Eristalinus”.
A species which has the Batesian mimicry (Protected by its resemblance to fool a potential predator, in this species case, by resembling a bee)
It has very distinctive eye pattern in the form of red spots and blotches. Is considered to be one of the nimblest flyer’s in the genus Eristalinus.
Habitat: Mainly warm, open ground, woodland edges and to be near fresh water locations. Prefers to rest and be close to various vegetation. Visits a wide variety of flowers and is a good pollinator.
