Hipparchia fidia
Hipparchia fidia common name Striped Grayling, (Linnaeus, 1767)
Family: Nymphalidae.
Wingspan 51 to 68mm
Flight season: Late June to September.
Often local, widespread and common on the Iberian Peninsula, Balearic Islands, South-Eastern France, also bordering parts of Italy and North Africa along the Mediterranean coastlines.
Habitat: Rocky sites with sparse woodlands often with pine trees and scrub. Markings on the butterfly prove to be effective camouflage within its habitat, especially when the butterfly settles on the ground angling its wings directly into the sun to minimise heat intake. This also avoids the butterfly casting a shadow that could attract would be predators.
Larvae feed on the following grasses: Cynodon, Brachypodium, Poa, Dactylis, etc.
