Kurzenkoiellus cf. Dasypygus
Kurzenkoiellus cf. Dasypygus
Kurzenkoiellus Dasypygus (Loew, 1849)
Family: Asilidae-Robberflies
Length: around 20mm
Flight Season: June till August.
Very little information has come to light on this species of Robberfly. So some information added is my own experience.
Habitat: Various waste and scrublands, with open sunny areas, including Pine forests in mountain regions. Presume like most Robberflies, the eggs are contained in a cocoon, buried into the sand. It is believed the Larvae are predators of a variety of soil dwelling grubs, maybe beetle larvae and worms included.
Adults will prey on a variety of flying insects, maybe bees and wasps as well.
Widespread over most of southern and into mid Europe, prefers warmer climates. Only common in localised places, where conditions are suitable.
Typical of most Robberflies will remain perched and staying vigilant, waiting for the next opportunity to catch a flying insect on the wing.
