Leptotes pirithous (Linnaeus, 1767) known as Lang’s Short-Tailed Blue. Wingspan: males 21mm to 29mm. Female 24mm 30mm.
Family: Lycaenidae
Flight season: February to November.
Males upper wings are purple bluish, females’ upper wings are bluish brown in colour.
Habitat: Hot dry grasslands, varied waste land, gardens, cultivations and coastal habitats.
Mainly southern Europe, France, Spain, Italy and countries around the Mediterranean coast. Can also be found in Asia Minor up to the Himalayas and most of Africa and Madagascar.
Larvae feed on legumes (a leguminous plant is a member of the pea family). Depending on temperature the life cycle takes about four to eight weeks.
