Megachile leachella (Curtis, 1828) Silvery Leafcutter bee.
Family: Megachilidae.
Female: FW 5 to 7mm, male: 5.5 to 7mm
Flight Season: May to October (peaking in July)
The Silvery leafcutter bee is a species of solitary bee, commonly found in the Western Palaearctic region. Preferring warmer countries of Europe and as far south to North Africa.
Habitat: More confined to the coastlines, as prefers a sandy textured terrain, for underground nesting. Very occasionally may be found living inland, although wherever sandy soils are present like sandpits.
Nesting: Collects parts of leaves and petals from various plants, to line and insulate the underground nest, preferring a well-drained and non-compacted, sandy ground.
A wide variety of plants are visited to feed from, for pollen and nectar, including Ragwort, Wild Flower Thistle and Sedum Sediforme as images show.
Parasites… Cleptoparasitic bees of the genus Coelioxys, including C. rufescens, C. quadridentate, and C. elongata
