Flight season: All year round, in the Mediterranean countries, further north, March to October.
A common and widespread hoverfly, found throughout Europe and into parts of Russia and Turkey.
The adults are often darker and well less marked, if the larvae have developed in colder temperatures.
Habitat: Deciduous, (a tree or shrub shedding its leaves annually) broad-leaved evergreen and is mostly a coniferous woodland edge species, here in the Alicante region of Spain.
The larvae feed on aphids and psyllids, that are feeding on various shrubs and trees.
