Orthetrum coerulescens (Fabricius, 1798) commonly known as “Keeled Skimmer”
Length: 36 to 45mm, Hindwing 28 to 33mm.
Family: Libellulidae.
Flight season: April to November.
A common and small Orthetrum.
Male colourings: The abdomen is a powdery blue with pale stripes; face is beige brown.
Habitat: Mainly near running waters, typically being streams and ditches also lakes; edged with plenty of vegetation. O. coerulescens will rarely settle on the ground, favouring elevated positions by perching on sticks and vegetation. Males are territorial and will often fly in the path of another male intruder. Females can be found hunting further afield, away from water.
Widespread and common species around the Mediterranean and can be found over much of Europe from North Africa up to Southern Scandinavia, Eastwards into Asia (to northern India).
