Orthetrum trinacria (Selys, 1841) commonly known as “Long Skimmer”
Length: 51 to 67mm, Hindwing 34 to 38mm.
Flight season: April to October.
This is one of the longest and most slender Orthetrum.
An aggressive Dragonfly and will frequently prey on other dragonflies.
More common in Tropical Africa and parts of South-West Asia. Not so common in North-West Africa. Also found in Sardinia, Sicily and edging the south coast of Italy. First recorded in Spain and Portugal in 1980 and 1991.
Habitat: Large still water lakes well planted with reeds.
Male is very dark blue in colour and the female is predominately yellow. Also images show an immature male with vivid blue eyes!
