Wingspan: 14 to 20mm.
Flight Season: May to August.
Clearwings are a unique family of Lepidoptera, having almost 1400 species worldwide.
Pyropteron triannuliforme, is populated over most of East Europe and into central Asia. Has been also recorded over most of Europe, into Britain and north into Denmark. There are over 100 species recorded in Europe, so the images shown below could be a very similar species to P. Triannuliforme.
Habitat: Rocky and Sandy sites, where the larvae (caterpillars) stay hidden in the roots and lower parts of plant stems, mainly feeding on Rumex (docks and sorrels).
The adults fly in the day-light hours.
