Scaeva Pyrastri (Linnaeus, 1758) Wing length 10.5mm to 12mm
Flight time: February to December. (Alicante)
A large and noticeably marked hoverfly, with pairs of upward curving creamy-white bars. This Hoverfly is known as the “Pied Hoverfly,” it is a common species throughout southern and central Europe.
Habitat…Practically wherever aphids are found for the larvae to feed. So, a wide range of habitats are visited including, urban gardens, grasslands, meadows and scrubland.
Scaeva Pyrastri will migrate to more central and northern European countries in early summer time (around June, from southern Europe). In late summer, another generation develops from the breeding migrants. Although not many adults and larvae will survive throughout the winter months in most northern countries of Europe. Females have a higher chance of overwintering in central Europe.
Adults are often seen visiting flowers for nectar and pollen. Larvae will feed on a wide variety of aphids. A larva will consume up to 500 aphids in its life.
