Wing Length 5 to 7.5mm. Body length 7 to 9mm
Syritta flaviventris is a species of syrphid fly in the family: Syrphidae.
Native to Southern Europe and Africa, was introduced to parts of South and North America in the 1800’s as a biological control agent, on various species of aphids, such as lettuce aphids.
Syritta flaviventris is very similar species to Syritta pipiens, both have an enlarged hind femur, which helps to distinguish the Syritta species. As with Syritta pipiens, it is one of the more common species in the insect family, Syrphidae.
Flight time in Southern Spain: April to November
Adults are low flying and are rarely seen flying higher, than 1 metre from the ground. The larvae and puparia are found in damp decaying plant matter, (decaying platyclades) also in animal and human manure.
Habitat: Prefers a moist to damp environment, with good vegetation growth, adults visit a wide variety of seasoned flowers and plants, for pollen and nectar.
