Zygaena occitanica (Villers, 1789) “The Provence Burnet”
Family: Zygaena.
Wingspan: 22 to 25mm
Flight season: June to August.
A widespread day flying moth, from the Algarve and the southern regions of Spain. Across to the eastern parts of the Cantabrian Mountains, Southern Russia, the Caucasus and east, to the western side of central Asia.
Burnets are sluggish fliers and they seem to drift through the air with rapid wing beats.
The caterpillar feeds on Dorycnium pentaphyllum, (a species of the pea family) and Anthyllis cytisoides, both species of plants grow commonly around the Mediterranean.
Habitat: Scrubland, dry grasslands, mountain slopes, bush and sparsely growing woodlands.
