Palloptera Quinquemaculata (Macquart, 1835) Common name “Five-spotted Flutter-Fly”
(The wings have just about five dark marks)

Family: Pallopteridae. commonly known as “Flutter flies” & “Trembling wing flies”
It is the males hold their wings out and rapidly vibrate them, hence where the descriptive name derives from.
Season May to August
Widespread throughout the United Kingdom, but mainly only the coastal regions of Scotland.
Pallopteridae Larvae occur in plant stems, shoots and flower heads; the larvae can also be found under the bark of trees where they prey on other insects such as bark beetles.
Habitat: Favouring shady well planted areas, such as woodland edges and along hedgerows. The adults can be found feeding from umbellifers plants such as Hogweed, Cow parsley is another favourite.
