Pterostichus nigrita
BTB Pterostichus nigrita (Paykull, 1790)
Family: Carabidae.
A medium sized Ground beetle, 9 to 12mm in length.
This species is very hard to separate from P. rhaeticus, apparently only separable by the structure of the genitalia. So hence the images below are “Believed to Be” P. nigrita.
A common species of beetle, seen all year round in the UK.
Habitat. This beetle is widespread across the UK and Europe. Prefers damp low land locations, for example marshes, water margins, with good vegetation growth of shrubs and grasslands. Will also be found in the dampness of hedgerows.
Will hunt day or night feeding on a wide range of invertebrate, including caterpillars, worms and small slugs.
