Sericomyia silentis
Sericomyia silentis
Sericomyia silentis (Harris, 1776) Wing Length 9.5mm to 14mm.
Flight time in U.K. May to November.
Generally widespread but scarce in central England and not particularly common.
Habitat...Adults favour marshlands, peaty ditches, tiny pools, woodland clearings and margins.
The larva has a long rear tail like extended breathing tube which enables it to live submerged in deoxygenated aquatic sediments, hence this is one of the "rat-tailed maggot" type of larvae. Mainly found in the rotting vegetation and semi-liquified peat of moorland ditches and flooded peat-cuttings.
