Volucella inanis (Linnaeus, 1758)
Family: Syrphidae.
Adults Length: 15 to 17mm Wing Length 12.25 to 14.25mm.
Adults on wing from June to September.
A widespread species across the southern parts of England up to the midlands. Can be found across the warmer countries of Europe and into North Africa.
Habitat. Woodland edges, Hedgerows, flowering meadow, gardens and parks, feeding on a wide range of summer flowers for nectar and pollen.
The Female will lay her eggs in the nests of social wasps (predominately in German and Common wasp nests). The female will also enter hornet nests, laying her eggs amongst the debris, at the bottom of the nest’s cavity.
