Volucella inflata. (Fabricius, 1794) Body length 12mm to 15mm. Wing length 11mm to 13mm.
Inflata is a large Hoverfly but one of the smallest Volucella than other European species
Flight season… May to September peaking in June and July. feeding on nectar from flowers, mostly from umbellifers. Larvae can be found in social insect nests.
Habitat… Favours heavily matured wooded areas and deciduous forests and is associated with the sap runs.( Adults have been observed ovipositing in sap runs on a tree trunk).
Fairly widespread Hoverfly in Europe, as far north as Sweden and can be found as far south into northern Spain.
